*The Unexplained is a weekly series documenting strange and unusual phenomenon that inspire my writing.
You move into a new home with your family expecting a fresh start. The very first night you’re there, faint scratching is heard. You cannot pinpoint the sound, but you assume it’s just rodents and go back to sleep. A few weeks later the home has been fumigated, but the sounds persist. Your kids tell you they are being woken in the night by a strange shadowy figure. Your wife tells you one day after she came home from work all the cabinets and drawers in the kitchen were thrown open at once.
As time goes on you are awoken one night and realize you were lifted out of bed. Once you come crashing down onto the sheets you face the unsettling reality you tried to deny: there is a poltergeist in the house.
The term “poltergeist” is German for “noisy ghost.” Poltergeists are different from other hauntings in that they make their presence known my being noisy and typically harassing of a home’s occupants. These malevolent entities start off their harassment in subtle ways. Then steadily their activity grows to the point where they need to be removed.
Levitation of household items and people are common occurrences in homes infested with a poltergeist. Individual cases may vary, but aside from knocking and objects moving on their own, people have reported feeling hands on them, breath on the backs of their necks, and being shoved down a flight of stairs.
Typically, but not always, poltergeists focus on one individual the most known as the “focus person.” This isn’t always the case though. For some reason these “focus people” are more often women than men.
Researchers of the paranormal and parapsychology cannot agree whether poltergeists are demons, ghosts, or psychic energy of distressed individuals. There is a theory that adolescents and the added stress on that time in a person’s life has the ability to manifest as a poltergeist. As with anything concerning the unknown, many folks tend to forget it is difficult to claim expertise on a subject matter with such little knowledge available.
What do we make of poltergeists other than the fact the phenomenon inspired on the most popular movies from the 1980’s? That is for the reader to decide. However, I mean more towards malevolent spirits than psychic energy. If humans had untapped telekinetic powers, this raises more questions than answers. It seems to be answering one unknown with another unknown which is unsatisfactory for me. Before the skeptic raises the counter point that the same could be said of demons, that may be true but it is dependent upon your worldview. Personally I feel there is far more evidence for demons than telekinesis, even if we are to go off of anecdotal stories only. However, you be the judge.
Have you experienced poltergeist activity before? Please, share your story. I would love to hear your experience.
